Celebrate Latinx Publishing with Primero Press & Word Up: Maria Hinojosa, Luis Jaramillo, & Michelle Herrera Mulligan

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Maria Hinojosa’s nearly thirty-year career as a journalist includes reporting for PBS, CBS, WGBH, WNBC, CNN, NPR, and anchoring and executive producing the Peabody Award–winning show Latino USA, the longest running national Latinx news program in the country. She is a frequent guest on MSNBC, and has won several awards, including a Pulitzer Prize, four Emmys, two Robert F. Kennedy Awards, and the Ruben Salazar Lifetime Achievement Award. Her podcast series Suave won the Pulitzer Prize for Audio Reporting in 2022. In 2010 she founded Futuro Media, an independent nonprofit newsroom and production company with the mission of producing multimedia content from a POC perspective. She lives with her family in Harlem in New York City.

Luis Jaramillo is the author of The Witches of El Paso and the award-winning short story collection, The Doctor’s Wife. His writing has appeared in LitHub, BOMB Magazine, Los Angeles Review of Books, and other publications. He is an assistant professor of creative writing at The New School. ABOUT THE MODERATOR

Michelle Herrera Mulligan (she/her/ella) is vice president and associate publisher of Primero Sueño Press/Atria Books. She has published groundbreaking fiction and non-fiction including Forever Strong, an instant New York Times bestseller, Danny Trejo’s critically acclaimed Trejo, and Pomegranate, named one of Amazon’s best books of the year in 2023. In 2020, she was named one of the top 100 most influential Latinas in the United States by Latino Leaders magazine.

CANCELLATION POLICY: Word Up Community Bookshop reserves the right to cancel events for any reason, including but not limited to safety concerns.

CODE OF CONDUCT: Please note Word Up has a zero tolerance policy for harassment or intimidation of any kind during any event, virtual or in-person. Please read our Safe Space Policy for more information. Anyone violating these rules will be expelled from the event at the discretion of the organizers. Please report all harassment to events@wordupbooks.com immediately.

PHOTOS & RECORDING: Events may be recorded, and video and photos may be posted on our website, social media, and elsewhere. If you would prefer not to be visible, please let a Word Up team member know.

PRIVACY: Registrants will be added to the Word Up mailing list. Your contact information will never be shared or sold. You may unsubscribe or update your subscription at any time.

ACCESSIBILITY: Recirculation is a wheelchair-accessible space with one ramp from the street level down to the store. Most of the shelves are on wheels and can be moved to provide additional access. The bathrooms are not yet ADA compliant and do not yet have a changing table but are gender neutral. The events are mic’d for sound and videos are captioned when possible. Free ASL interpretation is available for most programs upon request. Please email events@wordupbooks.com to request interpretation as early as possible.
