2021 Virtual Higher Ground Festival presents “Emigrate”
Dance. Poetry. Music. Visual Art.
Melanie Futorian, Suzanne Lorge, Humberto Rosario
Emigrate is a multi-performance piece about a journey. It’s about fortitude, fear, fields, freedom and more. The piece begins with a poem expressing the exodus from a native’s country, which is created and recited by Suzanne Lorge augmented with sound effects by project composer Humber Rosario. As the work progresses multi-national dancers perform choreography by Melanie Futorian with scarves painted by Cathy O’Keefe. The scarves symbolize, turbans/ headscarves, prayer mats/ praying postures to a satchel, a baby, pathways, water, a border wall, confinement and eventually freedom. It’s a symbolic journey of the many who leave their country towards the unknown. The collaboration also includes paintings by Cathy Jarcho.
Higher Ground Festival brings Northern Manhattan artists together to network and create interdisciplinary collaborations that are presented free to the community. This will be HGF’s 6th year as a notable arts festival in the upper Manhattan community.
